Methodology & data sources

Source. All figures come from Form 990-PF returns e-filed with the IRS and published as bulk XML at irs.gov Form 990 Series Downloads (public record, no license restrictions on IRS-published return data). Each foundation page links the filing on ProPublica Nonprofit Explorer and names the IRS e-file object ID.

Fields. Total assets = Part II end-of-year book value (TotalAssetsEOYAmt). Grants paid = Part I line 25 contributions, gifts, grants paid. Grant list = Part XV "Grants and Contributions Paid During the Year" (recipient, address, status, purpose, amount). Typical grant = median of listed grants.

Matching-gift programs. Tagged when the median grant is under $2,500 with 200+ grants listed, or when 25%+ of grant purposes mention matching or employee giving. Hidden from the home list by default. Application status has three tiers from the latest 990-PF Part XV: Accepts applications = line 2 (preselected only) not checked and the filing gives application details (contact, form, deadlines or restrictions); Not marked preselected = line 2 not checked but no application details filed, so verify before applying; Preselected only = line 2 checked. Default ranking puts Accepts applications first, then Not marked preselected, then Preselected only, and within that favours a $5K–$50K typical grant, many distinct recipients and multi-year filings.

Freshness. Foundations file 5–11 months after their fiscal year ends, and the IRS publishes batches monthly, so the newest data is usually 1–2 years old. Every page shows tax year, IRS filing date and the date we retrieved it.

Gaps. Paper filers and returns that put the grant list in a PDF attachment are not itemized. Recipient names are reproduced as filed (we only change capitalization). We never estimate or fill in missing values.

Names. E-filed returns often cut the legal name at one line; when the IRS Exempt Organizations Business Master File (EO BMF) has a longer version of the same name we display that, and show the name as filed on the page.

This build. 6,521 foundations selected from 134,223 990-PF filers in all IRS XML batches published for 2024, 2025 and 2026 (built 2026-10-29).
